When to Buy Your Christmas Tree in Andalucía: The Puente Deadline Every Newcomer Should Know

If you’re celebrating your first Christmas in Andalucía, here’s the one local secret you must understand:

Buy your Christmas tree during the long weekend of 6–8 December. Leave it any later, and you’ll be choosing from whatever is left — or stuck with whatever gets delivered. This early-December puente is when Andalusian families traditionally decorate their homes, and it’s the moment when the best trees disappear.

Why the 6–8 December Puente Matters

The puente combines two national holidays — 6 December (Constitution Day) and 8 December (Inmaculada Concepción) — creating a long weekend that marks the true start of the festive season. It’s the exact moment when fresh trees arrive… and when they sell out.

Where to Buy Your Tree

1. Local Florists (Floristerías)

Local florists are often the first shops in Andalucía to receive fresh firs, and they tend to offer the best-shaped, most carefully selected trees. Because florists usually work with smaller, higher-quality suppliers, their stock is limited — and the good ones disappear quickly.

2. Leroy Merlin & Big DIY Stores

Leroy Merlin & Big DIY Stores

Large DIY stores like Leroy Merlin, Bauhaus, or Bricomart offer a wide range of Christmas tree sizes, making them a convenient option if you’re looking for variety and consistent pricing. You’ll typically find everything from small apartment-friendly firs to towering showstoppers for spacious homes.

3. Viveros (Garden Centres)

Your best chance for larger trees.
In Granada, Viveros Taboada or Viveros Cambil  bring in a big selection each year. Still, the good ones go quickly.

Missed the Puente? Here’s What Happens

After 8 December, expect:

  • Very small or very tall trees only
  • Limited or uneven stock
  • Some shops will take your order but be ready to accept what ever they deliver to you.
  • To be creative and create you own substitute !

And Don’t Forget the Christmas Goodies…

Andalusians also rush to buy festive sweets during the same puente:

  • Turrón
  • Polvorones & mantecados
  • Roscos de vino, alfajores, pestiños

The best artisanal varieties often sell out right after 8 December.

Local Granada Tip: La Casa Pasteles (Albayzín)

Every early December they open a special side shop where families collect pre-ordered treats. You´ll notice a long queue going down la Cuesta Alhacaba There’s even an order sheet you fill in and hand over. By mid-month, the favourites are gone — and you’ll need to wait another year.

Roscón Lovers: Be Patient

The Roscón de Reyes only appears around January 5th, just before Three Kings Day.
In Granada, the most beloved roscón — lightly flavoured with orange blossom — is from La Ysla, or Casa Pasteles and it’s best to reserve ahead.

Haha yes — Spain runs Christmas like a well-oiled festive machine, and if you don’t plug into it early, you take the risk of missing out on the Christmas celebrations.
